2010 Gordon Searle Scholarship Award

Every year DC38 offers three Gordon Searle Scholarship Awards to kids of members to assist them pursue post secondary education in their chosen fields. The awards value at $1,500, $1,000, and $500.

The scholarship is open to all students who are enrolled at a post-secondary institution and whose parent is a DC38 member in good standing. Those who have been awarded the Gordon Searle Scholarship Award before are not eligible to apply again.

This year’s essay question is:

“Trade unions have played an important role in the growth of the construction industry for over 100 years. Discuss the historical values of membership and how the benefits are relevant in the economics of today’s construction industry.”

About the Award

The Gordon Searle Scholarship Awards were established in the memory of Brother Gordon Searle, who was Business Manager and Financial Secretary of Drywall Tapers and Finishers Union Local 2009 during the 1990s. Searle tragically lost his life in an automobile crash while driving to a union meeting in the Interior of B.C.


2009 Scholarship Winners

Three children of DC38 members have earned scholarships to help them finance the next stage in their education.

The Gordon Searle Scholarship Award of $1,500 went to Taryn Hubbard, daughter of Gordon Hubbard, to help her pursue her education as a communications specialist.

The Searle award of $1,000 was earned by Brad Bertholm, son of Brent Bertholm. Brad is pursuing his studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Elicia Peterson, daughter of Tom Peterson, earned The Searle award of $500. Elicia is studying for a diploma in business from BCIT.

This year, Connor Beck, son of DC38 member Jim Beck, won a S. Frank "Bud" Raftery scholarship. Connor was the only recipient in Canada who won the award. He is continuing his studies at the University of Western Ontario.
