DC38 supports the development of a casino near BC Place by Paragon Developments because it is a chance for B.C.'s construction sector to obtain much-needed jobs and help stimulate the economy.
"The construction industry is still struggling to recover from the 2008 market crash," said Patrick Byrne, DC38 Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer. "The new casino and hotel project will provide a much needed financial shot in the arm for Lower Mainland construction workers, as well as the downtown community as a whole."
The $500-million project also includes a proposal to hire residents of Vancouver's poor Downtown Eastside neighbourhood for at least 10 per cent of all jobs associated with the project.
Without the casino, the project, which also includes two hotels, will die and the 600 employees currently employed at Edgewater Casino will lose their jobs when Edgewater's lease runs out in 2013.
We urge members to email Vancouver City mayor and counsel a letter to express their support of this project. The City is encouraging speakers to attend project hearings to voice their thoughts on the project in person as well.
Every voice is important, and we encourage you to get involved with this important decision.
