DC38 retirees looking for an opportunity to get more active in the issues that affect seniors might be interested in learning about the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC.
COSCO is a non-partisan group that advocates on the behalf of older British Columbians for improvements in their health, social, and economic well-being. The number one priority for COSCO is to better the lives of B.C. seniors.
“It gives retirees from different organizations the opportunity to get together and exchange information, socialize and support each other,” said Art Kube, Past COSCO President. “COSCO also gives seniors in B.C. a collective voice.”
Since COSCO’s inception in the 1950s, the organization has grown to have over 70 affiliates who represent approximately 72,500 seniors. Now, COSCO maintains an active website where visitors can find useful information and timely articles on the issues that face older people.
Besides advocating on behalf of seniors, COSCO also runs a number of information programs on accident and illness prevention, the preparation of wills, power of attorney and fraud prevention. These programs are available free of charge to all retired members of affiliated organizations, Kube said.
It costs $25 a year for COSCO membership, and council meetings are held at the Hastings Community Centre on the second Friday of each month, except in July and August, at 10 a.m.
