NEWS
DC38 Invites Kids of DC38 Members to Apply for the Annual Gordon Searle Scholarship Award

July 22, 2011

DC38 is now accepting submissions for the Gordon Searle Scholarship Award for 2011.

The scholarship is an annual opportunity for the sons and daughters of DC38 members to acquire financial assistance for continuing their education beyond the high school level. The awards value at $1,500, $1,000, and $500.

This year DC38 is encouraging responses in mediums such as 800-word essays, videos, blog entries, photos, a combination thereof, or any other form applicants wish to explore the question with. DC38 will share the winning submission here on the website.

This year's essay question is:

Unions across the world have been using social media to engage their members and the community in union matters at an ever increasing rate. Please answer both parts of the following question.

First, research and comment on a union who you think has successfully used social media to get their message out to their audience. Then, building upon what you researched, what are some of your own ideas on how unions can grow and creatively use social media in the future?

Entrants must submit both their responses, in whatever medium they choose, on the above essay question and a completed application form by Sept. 5, 2011. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The scholarship is open to all students who are enrolled at a post-secondary institution and whose parent is a DC38 member in good standing. However, past recipients of the Gordon Searle Scholarship Award are not eligible to apply again.

The Gordon Searle Scholarship Awards were established in the memory of Brother Gordon Searle, who was Business Manager and Financial Secretary of Drywall Tapers and Finishers Union Local 2009 during the 1990s. Searle tragically lost his life in an automobile crash while driving to a union meeting in the Interior of B.C.
