DC38 Retirees Meet for Lunch and Reminiscing

DC38 retirees came together on May 19, 2011 to enjoy the Annual Retirees Luncheon at the Operating Engineers Hall in Burnaby.

For many retirees, it's the one time a year to reconnect with former colleagues and share stories about times spent working in the trades.

Albert Phillips and Jim Goodwin are two retirees who worked many decades together as sign painters. In fact, the two former colleagues keep in touch to this day.

"We travelled throughout B.C. working on signs. It was something I really enjoyed," said Phillips, adding that he keeps active these days curling in the winters and gardening in the summers.

Jim Goodwin, who everyone calls Timer, joined the union in 1950 and still operates his own DC38 sign shop today. When he's not running his sign shop, Timer visits his friends in the Prairies multiple times a year.

"I used to hunt when I was there, but not anymore," he said. "Now, I just watch everything go by."

After lunch, Patrick Byrne, DC38 Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer, handed out service pins to honour members who have put in years of membership.

"When I'm handing out pins that recognize, in some cases, 63 years of membership I get a sense of pride that is really difficult to put into words," Byrne said. "The only words that really express how I feel are, thank you."
