DC38 is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Gordon Searle Award. Annik Riendeau, daughter of Pierre Riendeau, won first place of $1,500. Leanne Elynuik, daughter of Dan Elynuik, won second of $1,000. And Steven Elynuik, son of Dan Elynuik, won third of $500.
Each student wrote an essay exploring the following question: "Trade unions have played an important role in the growth of the construction industry for over 100 years. Discuss the historical values of membership and how the benefits are relevant in the economics of today's construction industry."
The award winners were determined by a panel of readers who read the essays "blind," meaning each paper was stripped of any marker that might identify the writer, such as name for example.
The Gordon Searle Award is an annual program in honour of Brother Gordon Searle, who was Business Manager and Financial Secretary of Drywall Tapers and Finishers Union Local 2009 during the 1990s. Searle tragically lost his life in an automobile crash while driving to a union meeting in the Interior of B.C.
Annik is studying at the University of British Columbia in an accelerated nursing program. Leanne is working towards becoming a high school teacher at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Steven is pursuing computer information technician program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Congratulations and best wishes to these students.
