Drywall Tapers & Finishers prepare and finish gypsum wallboard surfaces by taping, spotting, pointing, filling, finishing, and sanding all field surfaces such as joints, angles and internal and external corners. Drywall finishers also apply protective coverings, sealers, and decorative finishes and mouldings to interior walls and ceilings.
Skill in hand-filling and machine-tool methods is required for preparation and application. Drywall finishers must be familiar with all aspects of the trade, including the tools, materials, procedures, environmental conditions on the job site, safety and the various regulations and standards of the industry. Skilled drywall finishers are well-organized and capable of working independently.
Although not a requirement of membership in District Council 38, drywall finishers should possess a recognized certificate of trade qualification and certificates of apprenticeship, and have completed approved training courses as required by the industry. Upgrading courses are available to members at the District Council's Training Centre.
Safety is stressed in all aspects of the drywall finishing trade. Physical and health hazards include the dangers of toxic poisoning from the fumes and dust of paints and related materials. Potential falls from elevated work platforms or ladders are another risk. Due to these hazards, drywall finishers must have appropriate training to recognize hazardous materials and be familiar with the regulations and standards which outline those requirements.
Drywall finishers should be physically fit to perform the tasks required by the trade and capable of taking detailed instruction on the job site.
