A Painter and Decorator selects, prepares and applies paints and other coatings to interior and exterior building surfaces and other structures such as bridges, pipelines, towers, dams, machinery and industrial complexes.
These surfaces can be made up of wood, plaster, stucco, stone, gypsum drywall board, concrete, brick and steel.
Coatings can be paint, organic and inorganic coatings, sealers and waterproofing, fiberglass resins and cloth.
Painters and decorators also prepare surfaces and, using paste or other adhesives, apply wall coverings, such as papers, cottons, muslin, burlap, grass cloth, vinyl, epoxy resin combinations and cambric-backed wood veneer. They also apply gold, silver and all other metal leaf and rubber sheeting for lining tanks.

Tools and equipment of the trade include, brushes, rollers, spray machines, sandblast units, pressure washers, metallizing and powder coating equipment, scaffolding, swing stages and specialty tools for fine finishes and wall coverings.
